CPCB issues guidelines for handling, treatment and disposal of waste generated during treatment of COVID-19 patients

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on March 25, 2020, issues guidelines for handling, treatment and disposal of waste generated during treatment, diagnosis and quarantine of COVID-19 patients. CPCB had received several queries from Urban Local Bodies regarding precautionary measures to be adopted by quarantine camps and house care units while handling the waste generated from these units.

Thus, CPCB has issued guidelines for management of waste generated during diagnostics and treatment of COVID-19 suspected and confirmed patients, are required to be followed by all the stakeholders including isolation wards, quarantine centers, sample collection centers, laboratories, ULBs and common biomedical waste treatment and disposal facilities, in addition to existing practices under BMW Management Rules, 2016. Under the guidelines, specific responsibilities of Urban Local Bodies, State Pollution Control Board and Committees and persons operating quarantine camps, quarantine home, homecare units have been incorporated.
