GPCB directs all industry transporting hazardous waste to follow certain compliances during transport

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) on January 31, 2020, directs all industry involved in handling, generation, collection, storage, packaging, use, treatment, processing, co-processing, utilization, offering for sale, transfer or disposal of hazardous waste to follow certain compliances while transporting any hazardous waste including spent acid.

The compliances are as under:

1. All the units involved in handling hazardous waste shall transport its hazardous waste through Global positioning system (GPS) enabled dedicated tankers or trucks only.

2. Online manifest shall be generated from the system of GPCB-XGN invariably.

3. Industry shall follow Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) Guidelines for Hazardous waste transportation strictly.

4. If the Hazardous waste is not transported in the above-mentioned manner, it would be considered as non-compliance under Hazardous Waste Rules, 2016 and its responsibility shall be on the hazardous waste generator following the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility.

Failure to comply with the above-mentioned conditions will attract punitive and penalty actions under Environment Protection Act, 1986.
