The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued a Circular which states the following guidelines for pollution control in Kolhus (jaggery units).

Guidelines for pollution control in Kolhus (jaggery units) in summarised manner:

The Kolhus shall not be allowed to set up at locations within 0.5 km distance from approved habitation, schools, hospitals and the sensitive zones. Only the dry waste shall be used as fuel and the solid waste shall be reused or properly disposed.  A flap shall be installed to control excess air from the furnace and it shall ensure cleanliness and hygiene in the premises. The solid wastes generated from the Kolhus shall be reused or properly disposed. They should confine to the prescribed rules of State Pollution Control Board.
